Abstract:
Archaeological trial-trenching and desk-based assessment preceded proposed residential development within the former farmyard at St Clere's Hall, Stanford-le-Hope. The main aim of the archaeological work was to investigate the footprint of a recently demolished 16thcentury timber-framed house / barn. The results of the archaeological work suggest that the timber-framed house / barn was built in the early 16th century and was initially used as a house until it was converted into a barn by the Spicer family in the late 17th century. At the same time a replacement house was built on the site of St Clere's Hall, which was then upgraded and largely rebuilt in c. 1735 by James Adams, who was a relative of the Spicer family by marriage. Brick walls were constructed to underpin the timber-framed walls of the barn during the 17th century or later, and a porch and an elevated threshing floor were probably added to the building during the second half of the 19th century. The other buildings of New Jenkins farmyard appear to have been comparatively short-lived and it seems likely that the form of the farm during the late 19th / 20th century was constantly changing.
