Abstract: |
Excavation undertaken ahead of the extension to the golf course of Ramside Hall Hotel. An L-shaped ditch probably represents a ditched enclosure and this gave a radiocarbon date of c. 450 BC (Late Iron Age). A later ditch, probably part of another enclosure, yielded a sherd of handmade pottery, of Iron Age or Roman date. The upper part of the ditch contained near complete cow and calf skeletons, both probably diseased animals. A radiocarbon date of AD 1720 ± 35 was obtained - the animals were possibly infected with rinderpest, which affected Britain in the 18th century. |
