Abstract: |
Trial trenching evaluation carried out December 2013 to inform a planning application for the re-development of the property, which lies close to the site of Rudchester Fort on Hadrian's Wall. Although the site itself does not lie with the scheduled area of the fort and its vicus, it is within the so-called WHS 'buffer zone' and possibly on the vicus margin. Features of late prehistoric or later date were recorded in three trenches, some most likely of Roman date. These likely relate to the vicus, lying on the margin of the area occupied or exploited by its inhabitants. |
