Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commisioned by St Modwen Properties PLC to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land off Ravenstone Road/ Coalville Lane, Coalville, Leicestershire ahead of a proposal for residential development. The Site comprises three fields, of which the two northern fields were seen to have no archaeological potential following geophysical survey and fieldwalking. The archaeological potential of the southern field was unclear, with the presence of scrub making fieldwalking impractical and the geophysics results being affected by spreads of probable modern material. Nine evaluation trenches were excavated across the southern field. No significant archaeological remains were present within the trenches. The results of the work revealed that the Site had been prepared and levelled for possible development. Made ground, in the form of hard core and crushed brick rubble, below a thin level deposit of crushed coal and hard core, was present across the site. The area was then overlain by an imported loamy soil and left to grass over.
