Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by WYB Planning and Design on behalf of Sainsbury's Supermarket LTD to carry out a topographic survey, an archaeological evaluation, and a watching brief on geotechnical works at land off Hind Street, Saint Mary, Devon. Further works were carried out in April 2011, when WA was commissioned to extend the previous evaluation by five trenches (later changed to three trenches). The Project officer was Jon Martin. The topographic survey was undertaken in the scrubland area of the site previously known to contain an orchard. Due to the presence of modern trees and scrub, no growth pattern indicative of a historic orchard could be discerned. Of the 14 geotechnical pits observed in the scrubland area, eight were blank and five were too deep to fully record. Test Pit 7 revealed a sub-circular post-medieval pit. Seven trenches were machine excavated in the scrubland area; four were blank and Three contained archaeological features. A post-medieval construction cut and associated 19th century brick structure was recorded in Trench 10. Trench 11 revealed an undated posthole. Trench 12 had an undated gully and ditch. In April 2011, three evaluation trenches were excavated beneath the car park area of the site. Modern made ground up to 1.6 metres deep was present beneath the car park surface, suggesting significant terracing and levelling of the natural ground surface during the post-medieval period. Archaeological material collected from this layer dated to between the 19th and 20th century. Trench 17 contained a post-medieval oval pit with a single fill. A shallow north-east to south-west ditch of unknown date ran across trenches 17 and 18. Trench 19 was blank.
