Abstract:
In March and April 2014 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried an archaeological evaluation at Bedford Bus Station, Allhallows, Bedford, Bedfordshire (NGR TL 0474 4990). The evaluation was commissioned by Britannia Construction Ltd and was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to permission to demolish the existing Stagecoach offices, passenger concourse, bus station café and associated kiosks and to install new Stagecoach offices, passenger concourse and travel and tourism centre, with associated works. The site is located in the western part of Bedford town centre. It had a potential for Saxon, medieval and post-medieval archaeological remains associated with the historic core of Bedford, and potentially evidence of the Saffron Ditch and for burials or other activity associated with the medieval Allhallows parish church. In the event the evaluation revealed two ditches, a pit and a gully; all located in Trench 2 in the southern part of the site. Two of the features (Gully F2005 and Pit F2007) contained Saxo-Norman and medieval (10th - 12th century) pottery. The site was significantly truncated by the modern development. The two excavated trenches were subject to waterlogging.
