Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation of the site in order to discharge a condition of planning permission. The evaluation was required because the area immediately to the west of the site is known to contain archaeological remains of Saxon and medieval date and because part of the site itself lies within an area formerly part of the cemetery associated with St Dunstan's church. The three excavated trenches varied significantly from those proposed in the written scheme of investigation because of previous geotechnical investigation and the presence of services. A large post-medieval pit was recorded at the northern end of Trench 1, the upper fill of which contained many roof tile fragments thought to have been dumped during either the demolition or re-roofing of a nearby building. No other archaeological features or datable deposits were recorded and no finds of earlier date than post-medieval were recovered. |
