Abstract:
An archaeological field evaluation by trial trenching and subsequent excavation was undertaken on land at Former Lisk Controls site, Nottingham Road, Leicestershire by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) between 28th February - 4th April 2012. The potential of the site was highlighted from an archaeological desk-based and Historic building assessments which indicated that the site was located close to know medieval remains and was on former pottery factory. A limited trial trenching evaluation undertaken prior to the demolition of the factory identified the base of a pottery kiln and associated structures. A second evaluation was undertaken once the demolition of the factory buildings was complete. This indicated that further kiln features were present within the proposed area for a new residential development. Two excavation areas were examined and five kiln bases along with associated structures were revealed. Two of the kilns were mid to late 19th century up-draft kilns and the remaining three were down-draft kilns dated to the 20th century. The site archive will be held by Leicestershire County Council under accession number X.A90.2011.
