Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land adjacent to Peel Hill motte in the centre of Thorne, South Yorkshire, to assess the extent of survival of archaeological deposits and to inform proposals for the redevelopment of the site. The results of a previous evaluation and geotechnical test pitting were incorporated to provide the fullest possible assessment of archaeological preservation across the site. The evaluation has indicated that the northern end of the site has a low potential for archaeological features and deposits. The remains of 18th- to 20th-century buildings were found in the southeast and southwest areas of the site. No features pre-dating the post-medieval period were found, suggesting that medieval occupation activity was concentrated on the street frontages, with the majority of the site being fields from this period onwards. No evidence for features associated with the medieval castle were found, despite the proximity of the motte to the northern end of the site. Graves associated with a former Quaker chapel were exposed in the eastern part of the site; the locations of the grave cuts were recorded, but they were not excavated to a depth at which burials were exposed.
