Abstract: |
A section of the original canal wall was uncovered as part of the upgrade to the public footpath on the west side of Speakers Martin Lock, Forth and Clyde Canal at Speirs Wharf. The remains survived to a length of 16.5m, having been truncated previously to its north and southeast ends. Cleaning indicated that the front was made of dressed ashlar blocks. The top course of capping stones no longer survives. The back-face of the wall was made up of rough mortared stone. The test pit revealed that the back face of the wall it only survived to one course lying on 150mm of sand, which overlay a bank of clay (lining for the canal). The front face is presumably much deeper and survives to its full original depth. |
