Note: |
Gloving in the Great Torrington area was established from at least the early 17th century. The success of the local industry culminated in the foundation of the factory in 1884, an event of great significance in the town as it would have greatly improved the efficiency of glove production. The building survived very well at the time of this survey although the machinery had been removed. Evidence in the form of posters and graffiti in the canteen area, some dating back to the earlier 20th century, illustrate that it had become central to the local community rather than merely a place of work. Present expectation is that the Site will be sold as it stands. Groundworks undertaken in future will require monitoring and recording as set out above but as a further, discrete, stage in the archaeological programme.
