Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on internal alterations works and on groundworks in the churchyard. The monitored groundworks within the churchyard consisted of the excavation of three service trenches and a new manhole. This identified a simple deposit sequence of a very deep and substantial graveyard soil horizon and an underlying natural horizon. A large number of disarticulated human bone fragments were recovered from the graveyard soils and the relatively shallow foundations of the west tower were exposed. The internal alteration works were confined to the western end of the nave and north aisle of the church. This comprised the hand excavation of a new service trench. This excavation revealed an undated make-up deposit and an undated buried soil horizon below the stone floor slabbing. These excavations also identified the line of the 12th century foundation of the north wall of the nave and an earlier floor surface to the nave consisting of rammed chalk. The removal of rendering on the lower levels of the south wall of the nave and of the east wall of the west tower also revealed original wall fabrics and bonding materials.
