Abstract:
Albion Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd to undertake a programme of archaeological works at the site of the former Lower School in Shortstown, Bedfordshire. associated with the erection of the school in the later 1950s. The initial component of the mitigation works comprised open area excavation in the vicinity of Trench 5 from the earlier evaluation. This revealed several phases of activity, though all features had been affected by general truncation. The earliest phase of activity comprised the creation of an enclosure in the early-middle Iron Age. Subsequently, another ditched enclosure was tacked on to the east. Evidence of recutting suggested that this area was a focus of activity for an extended period of time. Subsequently, the area was utilised in the Saxo-Norman period with traces of two phases of activity. These remains were very truncated, making interpretation difficult, though associated finds suggest a focus of habitation in the vicinity. In the medieval period this area was under arable cultivation, with a series of furrows following the slope of the land. Generally, a buried ploughsoil sealed most of the earlier archaeological features, indicating that ploughing was the main cause of truncation. During backfilling (following completion of the excavation) two small machine-cut trenches were opened, tracing the continuation of features eastwards from the open area up to the standing building. These trenches suggested that features continued into the area of the main school building. Following demolition of the main school building to the floor slab, limited trenching was undertaken at the western margin of building to determine if the continuation of the features could be identified. Only the base of one of the very substantial ditches identified in the open area excavation to the west was revealed.
