Abstract: |
As the result of an archaeological condition placed on planning consent for the construction of a two storey extension to 31 Icknield Way East, Baldock, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to an understanding of the origins and development of the settlement at Baldock from the prehistoric period onwards. Monitoring of the footing trenches revealed the sequence of natural chalk overlain by modern building rubble and overburden, suggesting that the stratigraphic sequence was severely truncated when the house was constructed. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were encountered. |
