Abstract:
Natural deposits across the site comprised a mid reddish brown silty clay brickearth with bands of gravel. A few prehistoric struck flints were recovered but these were all residual and represented background activity rather than any definable areas of occupation. The first clear phase of occupation dated to the later 1st to mid 2nd centuries AD and was represented by the interment of a number of cremation burials. Six such features were recorded in an eastern central part of the site, each accompanied by at least one ceramic vessel. A small number of other features may also have been contemporary with this phase. A second phase of Roman activity could be broadly dated to the 3rd to 4th centuries and mostly comprised a series of ditches on north-south and east-west alignments that appeared to have represented agricultural enclosures laid out in a regular pattern a short distance from Roman Stane Street, which ran from east to west a short distance south of the site. Again a small number of other features also appeared to be contemporary with the ditches. There was little evidence of activity on the site between the later Roman and post-medieval periods. A small number of boundary features appeared to date to the 18th to 19th centuries, though may have been earlier, and more recent activity was associated with building developments on the site from the 19th to later 20th centuries.
