Abstract:
This geomagnetic survey took place on an area to the east of the village known as 'Kirkfield' and the reported site of an Anglo-Saxon crosshead (Tees HER 3479). The survey used a Bartington Grad601-2 dual fluxgate gradiometer. The sample interval was 0.25m and the traverse interval was 1m. The survey revealed a number of curvilinear anomalies consistent with archaeological features. Other anomalies included ploughed out field boundaries, ridge and furrow trends (Tees HER 0979) and a potential natural palaeo-channel. A targeted resistance survey (see Tees Event 890) followed this survey. This targeted resistivity survey followed the results of a geomagnetic survey (Tees Event 889). Five discrete areas were sampled using a geoscan RM15D Advanced resistance meter and MPX15 multiplexers with a mobile twin probe separation of 0.5m. The sample interval was 1m and the traverse interval was 1m. The resistance survey largely proved many of the geomagnetic anomalies to be negative e.g. wet areas within the field, although the broad ploughing trends and natural channels were all picked up.
