Abstract: |
In December 2013 seven trial trenches were excavated in fields at Harrowgate Lane to the west of Summerville Farm in order to characterise a series of previously identified geophysical anomalies (Tees Event 997). Trenches 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 were 20m long, and Trenches 4 and 6 were 13m long. Archaeological features were identified in Trench 1, which contained a modern ditch possibly related to the pillbox to the north (Tees HER 8075), and Trench 2, which contained a post medieval ditch probably representing a former field boundary or drainage channel. The majority of the finds recovered were of 19th century date or later, with the exception of one sherd of 17th or 18th century tin glazed earthenware. |
