Abstract: |
The Grade II listed Spotted Dog (former) public house, situated just to the south of Forest Gate, is thought to be the oldest secular building in the London Borough of Newham. It has been suggested that it was Henry VIII's Forest Gate hunting lodge but was converted to a coaching inn in the early 19th century. Other aqlterations and additions have occured, including an extensive programme of renovation in 1968. Timbers from the hall and east wing proved unsuitable for analysis, however samples from the west wing gave a suggested felling date of AD 1468-90, with construction of the roof following shortly after. |
