Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring works are being undertaken in respect to the construction of wind turbines at GlaxoSmithKline, Irvine, North Ayrshire. During the monitoring works for the groundbreaking works at Turbine 3, located to the south of the GlaxoSmithKline factory, a number of significant archaeological features were uncovered which warranted the need for archaeological excavation works to be carried out on site. The excavation works revealed the presence of a potential Early Iron Age circular ring-groove house with internal pits and postholes. Postholes located to the immediate west of the structure may represent a second potential structure in the form of a post-ring circle. This overlaps the location of the ring-groove structure and may suggest that the site has seen multiple phases of occupation. The site appears to be unenclosed. Several fragments of prehistoric pottery were uncovered as well as a fragment of a stone saddle quern. The site also showed more recent activity in the form of furrows and possible drainage ditches. One large ditch located to the west of the ring-groove structure, which curves slightly away from it, is of uncertain date and may either be contemporary with the earlier features on site or may represent a post-medieval or later drainage channel or land boundary.
