Abstract: |
Clergy House was built in 1766 as Church Hill House, a middle class home in what was then the fashionable part of the town centre, and during much of the 19th century was occupied as a doctor's house and premises, then in 1919 was acquired by the cathedral to house members of its clergy. The original building is of three storeys with cellar, though this 1766 house may have been larger than the surviving front wing which now represents it. In the first half of the 19th century the house was doubled in size by the addition of the parallel, rear wing. The present building has undergone much rebuilding and alteration in the twentieth century, though many historic aspects do survive. |
