Abstract: |
A detailed gradiometry survey was carried out over approximately 8.9 hectares of cultivated arable farmland at Thurcaston. The survey did not reveal any features which could be considered as probable archaeology; however a number of positive linear anomalies were identified as possibly relating to cut features of archaeological origin. The southern half of the site contains multiple parallel features which due to their uniformity are probably related to modern agricultural activity. A faint linear anomaly is visible, bisecting the central part of the site and this has been identified as a former field boundary, appearing on maps dating from 1884-85. There are two strong positive linear features which are associated with modern services such as pipes or cables. The rest of the anomalies are all associated with modern magnetic disturbance, from man holes visible on the surface or field boundaries, and other scattered metallic objects. |
