Abstract:
A total of 18 linear trial trenches were excavated in 2014 targeting the results of a geophysical survey (see Tees Event 1063). Archaeological features were noted in four of the trenches. These were all linear ditches and gullies that were interpreted as boundaries of drainage features of the later prehistoric or Romano-British periods. This tentative dating is based on the presence of brome grass within the samples, this is commonly associated with spelt wheat which may indicate an Iron Age or Romano-British date. The remaining trenches did not produce archaeological features and many of the geophysical anomalies were interpreted as changes within the natural subsoils.
