Abstract:
In July 2015 AS conducted historic building recording at Nos. 26-32 Fish Street, Redbourn, Hertfordshire. The recording was carried out in order to fulfil a planning condition attached to approval for the demolition of Nos. 26-28 and the conversion of No. 32 to residential. As part of the development three new blocks are to be constructed and a programme of archaeological evaluation was conducted and is the subject of a separate report by AS (Pozorski 2015). Of the two buildings subject to recording, No. 32 retains a level of historic interest and was constructed as the manager's house to the gas works complex developed in 1861. The gas works occupied the plot to the west. No.32 is brick built and retains much of its original external appearance with original brickwork and eight-over-eight sash windows (these are replaced but replicating the likely earlier appearance). Internally, however, the building has been denuded of any historic fixtures and fittings. The second structure (Nos. 26-28) is of no historic merit although the phased brickwork of the outer walls might suggest the historic building visible on historic maps was replaced piecemeal throughout the 20th century. This resulted in the modern building that exists today, where no fixtures and fittings survive of any interest and all the windows and doors are uPVC.
