Abstract:		 Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Amesview Developments Ltd to carry out an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land off Garden Close, Wittering, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire The site lies in an area of known archaeological sensitivity, particularly for remains dating to the medieval period. The trial trenching revealed a similar sequence of deposits in both trenches. No cut features were encountered and most of the deposits were of modern origin. However, a single layer, which extended through both trenches and sealed the natural geology, produced a sherd of Anglo-Saxon pottery. The layer could conceivably be a remnant agricultural soil dating to the Anglo-Saxon period but as the date is based on a single pottery sherd and no other finds were recovered from the site the possibility that the sherd was residual within a deposit which was laid down much later cannot be fully dismissed.
