Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by GUARD Archaeology Ltd, on behalf of Scottish Coal, at Broken Cross Surface Mine, near Devonburn, South Lanarkshire. The work was carried out to satisfy Condition 18 of Planning application P/PP/75/96/SR/90 and comprises a phased approach to investigation at the site. The trial trench evaluation comprised a 5% evaluation of the Phase 3 area in advance of coal extraction, followed by a phase of post-strip walkover survey. No significant archaeological features were encountered during the evaluation or walkover except a field drainage system relating to agricultural improvement works in the 19th and 20th centuries.
