Abstract: |
An Archaeological Evaluation at 12-14 Water Lane, Richmond, London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames, TW9 1TJ consisted of four trenches undertaken in conjunction with contamination and structural testing. Natural terrace gravels were recorded in all four trenches. One trench also recorded a layer of natural brickearth sealed the terrace gravels. a series of 18th century brick wall foundations were located throughout the trenches; these buildings can be seen on 18th century cartographic sources. These buildings appeared to remain extant on the site until the mid 20th century when a World War II bomb strike menat that they were demolished and the site was cleared. This was reflected in the archaeological recorded by a sequence of ashy demolition deposits backfilled into the area of the brickwork and then levelling the top of the site above them. This was sealed by a concrete surface, the modern ground level. |
