Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned by King's Cross Central General Partner Limited to undertake building recording of Stanley Building South, London Borough of Camden, centred on OS NGR TQ 30105 831180. The building is Grade II listed and lies within the King's Cross Conservation Area. Building recording was carried out in 2013 as a condition of planning permission for its conversion into office space. The building was constructed in 1864-5 as a purpose-built low-rent 'philanthropic' residential block by the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company. Originally there were five similar five-storey blocks with four dwellings on each floor. This is the only one that remains. The building is largely single-phase, although alterations have taken place over its lifetime. The fabric of the building is mainly original, and it retains a variety of 19th-century fixtures and fittings. Some of the flats' layouts have been changed in order to accommodate two flats per floor rather than the original four. On each floor the two former outer flats each had two chambers while the two inner flats each had one. These bedrooms were at the front of the building. All flats had a living room positioned towards the rear of the building with a scullery beyond, which would have been used for washing dishes and laundering clothes. None of the original coppers survive although two ranges are still extant. Beyond the scullery was a WC, sink and small coal store.
