Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was conducted during groundworks associated with a property development at 87 Rayleigh Avenue, Rayleigh, Essex SS9 5DL. The investigations found evidence of the underlying natural sand and gravels overlain by naturally formed subsoil. These layers were sealed by topsoil and, in places, a modern demolition layer. A possible ditch and pit of Late Bronze Age / Iron Age date were recorded cutting into the gravel at the very east of the site. A post-medieval pit containing a small piece of redeposited prehistoric pot, a flint flake and some 18th /19th century ceramic building material was observed at the south east of site. |
