Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation consisting of one 15m x 2m trench was undertaken on land at the Royal Oak public House, 23 Bridgend, Chellington, Carlton, in Bedfordshire. Bedford Borough Council conditionally approved a planning application for the construction of two new houses at the site, subject to the excavation of a trail trench within the footprint of the new buildings to assess the archaeological potential and inform the need for any further archaeological mitigation associated with the development. Chellington was a large Domesday village which developed into a tri-focal settlement in the medieval period following the amalgamation of the parish with neighbouring Carlton. The original village around St. Nicholas' church was gradually deserted in the late medieval/early post-medieval period, surviving as earthworks, with the village growing around a third focal point closer to Carlton. The villages eventually merged in the mid-20th century, forming the settlement pattern seen today. The Royal Oak dates from the 19th century, with historic mapping confirming the site of the new houses has remained undeveloped as access to the rear of the pub, possibly to a stable block. The evaluation encountered three cut features. Two intercutting pits on the north side of the trench contained medieval pottery. Just south of these features was the remnant of a single posthole.
