Abstract: |
South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) were commissioned to conduct archaeological monitoring and recording at 1 Bampton Street, Minehead, Somerset, during developments to the site. A short desk-based assessment indicated that there was some archaeological potential within the proposed development area. This included sporadic prehistoric finds and potential earlier phases of Medieval and Post-Medieval urban and sub-urban developments. The majority of buildings along Bampton Street were built in the 18th century. There were no signs of earlier structures within the footing trench. However, an undated rough cobbled surface pressed into the natural may have represented an original yard surface to the rear of the house or may have been a late 19th century bedding layer for an expanded yard area that was in use into the 20th century. No significant archaeological deposits or features were revealed during the monitoring and recording and it was not deemed necessary to observe the remaining footings to be excavated at the south-eastern end of the garden. |
