Abstract:
The report describes the results of a watching brief conducted during the excavation of foundations for a replacement extension to the farmhouse at Bradley Hall Farm, Appleton, Warrington. The moat is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Number 13447), though this applies only to the moat and sub-surface deposits within the moat platform. The farmhouse is not scheduled or listed. The stratigraphy was consistent along the full run of the foundation trench. The foundations to the 20th century extension were shallow and built over a layer of mixed soil and boulder clay which sealed a poorly constructed cobbled surface, probably intended as a temporary working surface laid during construction of the present house. The cobbles sealed a buried soil horizon which in turn sealed a layer of clay which was either undisturbed geology or spoil from the excavation of the moat. Few finds were present beyond the base of a 14th-15th century jar (from the buried soil layer), and some fragments of late-17th to 18th century pottery including the near complete rim of a bowl. There was a localised layer of iron slag below the cobbles which was probably the product of smelting rather than smithing, though this is likely to have been brought to site from elsewhere. The south end of the farmhouse appears to be built over a cellar which is no longer in use.
