Abstract: |
Landscaping works at Forty Hall, Enfield were monitored by MOLA Northampton, formerly Northamptonshire Archaeology, between January and August 2014. The works were undertaken as part of the 'Landscapes of Change' and 'Parks for People' project to reconstruct the 18th-century designed landscape. It focussed on the desilting of the ornamental lake in front of the Hall, the Mound and features in the Pleasure Grounds. The original 17th-century form of the lake was thought to have been much smaller and deeper. Its 18th- and 19th- century form was substantially larger and shallow. Two specimen trees along the line of the southern path were thought to be the centre pieces of 'roundels'. They may have replaced statues, although there was no evidence for that. |
