Abstract: |
Hundon Hall lies on an eminence approximately 1 km north-east of the parish church and commands impressive views of the village and the Stour Valley to the south. This conspicuous location is of exceptional historic importance as the site of the largest Domesday manor in Suffolk, and as part of the medieval estate of the Earls of Gloucester at nearby Clare castle it is unusually well documented. The present hall dates only from the 16th and 17th century (yet appears not to be listed) and the exact site of its Anglo-Saxon predecessor and what must have been a very extensive contemporary farm complex is unclear. A monitoring of the associated groundworks produced no results. |
