Abstract: |
Monitoring of a topsoil strip over an area of 154sqm for an extension to Moat Farm, a house situated within a medieval moated enclosure, TMX 002, has revealed evidence of limited activity on the site from the Late Saxon/Early medieval to Post-medieval periods. A linear, Late Saxon/Early medieval ditch was replaced with the moated enclosure in the medieval period. The moat originally had an internal extension but this was backfilled, relatively soon after its original excavation. Within the enclosure there was little evidence of any medieval settlement activity. There was a distinct lack of medieval structural or material finds evidence, which would be expected if the enclosure had been occupied, with only one possible yard or floor surface containing Late medieval ceramic building material. However the site only covered a small proportion of the enclosed area. The final features on the site, two intercutting ditches, indicate a continuity of use, with some form of activity in the Post-medieval period. |
