Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief monitored groundworks at this site which comprised the mechanical excavation of a soakaway to accommodate a septic tank along with associated service trenching. Mareham Lane, a Roman road forms the western boundary to the site. A geophysical survey undertaken in 2009 in the field to the immediate north ientified possible roadside activity along with possible prehistoric and Roman enclosures. Other undated linear, curvilinear and pit-like anomalies along with medieval ridge and furow were also found by this survey. Iron Age and Roman pottery has also been found at this location. Further finds of Roman pottery have been made to the west and prehistoric finds including worked flints to the north. The archaeological monioring identified a simple deposit sequence of a modern topsoil horizon, an undated ploughsoil horizon and natural horizons of clays. These deposits were encountered throughout the monitored areas. The archaeological watching brief did not ientify any archaeological activity and there were no finds. |
