Abstract: |
The watching brief monitored the excavation of three test-pits which were required for a geotechnical investigation to establish the existing ground conditions. The work revealed that two distinct natural horizons survive at the site, comprising terrace sands and gravels overlain, in the southern end of the site, by in situ brickearth. Here, in TP5, a layer of redeposited brickearth was found sealing the intact brickearth; this most likely derived from cut-and-fill activity during the construction of the current building in the 1930s. The northernmost intervention, TP3, revealed the remains of the orchestra pit at a level below the height of the surviving brickearth to the south, evidence that in this area there has been severe truncation during the 1930s building works. |
