Abstract:
Between 21st October and 4th November 2010 an archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited at The Former Riddings Allotment Gardens, Burringham Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire prior to a proposed development of the site for residential purposes. The site was located immediately to the west of Roman Way, a modern residential development in the area of the former house and gardens of 66 Burringham Road. Archaeological investigation of this site in 2002, prior to the development, revealed extensive deposits of Late Iron Age and Romano-British date, which appeared likely to extend westwards onto the former allotment gardens site. Four phases of geological and archaeological activity were identified: Phase1, Jurassic limestone and clay formation; Phase 2, late Pleistocene subsoil development; Phase 3, late post-medieval activity associated with agriculture; Phase 4, Modern activity associated with the former allotments. No evidence for the Iron Age or Romano-British activity identified to the east was found and it is now believed the western boundary of that site ran along the lane that now separates the two sites.
