Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological works was carried out in advance of a housing development by Barratt East Scotland on land next to Blackchapel Road, Edinburgh. The works comprised a 10% evaluation and a basic building recording of the upstanding remains revealed when the site was cleared of vegetation. The upstanding remains comprised a railway platform for goods and materials entering / exiting the factory and the gable wall of one of the factory warehouses. The evaluation revealed mining pits on the SE side of the site probably associated with Niddrie coal pit. Trenches excavated over the factory complex revealed a series of walls and concrete / brick floor surfaces. Several flue tunnels were also revealed which appeared to have been connected to coal-fired furnaces and kilns. |
