Abstract: |
Evaluation followed by open area excavation at the site of the former St. Anthony's Brickworks, Walker. Five trenches were excavated in the evaluation, three of which (Tr. 1, 3 and 5) recorded no archaeological remains of note, with deep dump deposits likely representing infilled 19th-century clay quarry pits. Tr. 2 recorded an early post medieval ditch and the probable trackside ditch and trackbed of an 18th-century waggonway related to High Pit of Byker Colliery. Tr. 4 recorded structural remains of St. Anthony's Brickworks, including brick walls and concrete floor surfaces. Two open areas were investigated to further expose the remains found in Tr. 2 and 4. |
