Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology ltd (PCA) was commissioned by Hugh Steed to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the groundworks for the construction of a residential property, focusing on the excavation of previously undeveloped ground for the construction of a basement, at 73 Switchback Road South, Maidenhead, Berkshire. No archaeological deposits, features, artefacts or environmental remains (significant or otherwise) were observed during the course of the watching brief. A thin layer of modern build up covered a natural clay which in turn covered a natural gravel. No other natural deposits were encountered. The excavation stopped at approximately 3m below ground level. The intact brick earth clay, with no sign of disturbance, suggests that there has been no gravel extraction with in the study site. As such early prehistoric finds from gravel extraction could not have originated from this particular location. |
