Abstract: |
Trent and Peak Archaeology was contracted to conduct an archaeological evaluation prior to the submission of planning application for a residential development. The designated area of investigation covered land at, and to the rear of, No. 3 Top Street, Appleby Magna, a village in North West Leicestershire. Evidence of ridge and furrow ploughing was present. Linear ditches were also encountered which are interpreted as field boundaries, possibly in use from the 14th - 18th centuries based on the pottery recovered which comprised 17th/18th century piece of coarse earthenware and a 14th/15th century sherd of Chilvers Coton ware. There is also the possibility of quarrying activity for Bromsgrove sandstone used as a local building material of unknown date on this site, as suggested by the substantial cut observed in one of the trenches. |
