Abstract:
This report assesses the archaeological and architectural significance of Worcester City Football Club's ground at St George's Lane, Worcester (NGR SO 849 563). It also assesses the likely impact of a proposed development, and suggests appropriate forms of mitigation. The report begins with an assessment of the site's archaeological potential. In summary, this is thought to be limited. There is no evidence that it was ever a focus of activity before the construction of the football ground in 1905, and it seems that the original development, and later works, have removed most pre-modern deposits. The report continues by assessing the present buildings on the site. These consist of a purpose built changing room built in 1939; a covered terrace, known as the 'cowshed', built in 1957, the main stand built in 1963, the main façade built in 1948, along with the gates and the remains of the 'Brookside' stand built in 1929. All the buildings were built by and for the Football Club. After the assessment, the report addresses the likely impact of the proposed development. This will involve the demolition of all existing buildings, re-landscaping, and the construction of houses and car parking facilities. The demolition of the buildings is considered to represent a minor adverse impact, as they have little intrinsic architectural merit. However, attention is drawn to their cultural value and the contribution of the site to the area's character. Finally, the report concludes by recommending two types of mitigation. A photographic survey would provide an appropriate record of the buildings, and could be tailored to highlight their cultural value. The impact of the development on any buried remains is more difficult to address. However, pre-modern deposits might survive along the north, east, and west sides of the site, and these might be worth investigating by means of a field evaluation or watching brief.
