Abstract:
A series of three open-area archaeological excavations were undertaken on land off Tallow Hill and Pheasant Street, Worcester (NGR SO 8556 5506). It was undertaken on behalf of St Modwen Developments Ltd, who intended to demolish all existing buildings and erect new retail units with associated services and landscaping, including the realignment of Tallow Hill. A planning application was submitted to Worcester City Council (ref. P98L0376) who considered the area to be of archaeological interest and produced a brief for an archaeological excavation. The project aimed to identify and record the 19th century domestic building remains off Tallow Hill/Hill Street (Area 1), former Regent Street/Cromwell Street (Area 2), and the industrial remains of the Vulcan ironworks foundry off Pheasant Street (Area 3). The project continued a sequence of earlier archaeological work undertaken on the whole development site, including desk-based assessment, field evaluation including geophysical survey, and building recording.
