Abstract: |
From 23rd September to 4th October 2010 Oxford Archaeology East conducted an evaluation at Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket prior to the construction of new stables, paddocks, storage yard and warm-up track. Evidence for prehistoric activity was encountered across the development area but was concentrated in two main areas of the site. The activity consisted of chiefly Late Neolithic struck flint scatters, Early Neolithic and Late Bronze Age pit and posthole groups, Middle Bronze Age field systems and, most notably, two burnt pits each containing a complete or near-complete Early Bronze Age vessel. Large quantities of struck flint were recovered from the trench topsoil, particularly in the soil above and surrounding the two Early Bronze Age pits. |
