Abstract:
A historic building recording and watching brief was undertaken on behalf of Travelodge Hotels Ltd in consultation with Anglo Holt Ltd, at Meadow Farm, Dagnell End Road, Bordesley, Redditch, Worcestershire (NGR SP 0420 6936; SMR refs WSM 36082 and WSM 36084 ). This revealed that a mid 15th century building was the earliest phase of building, with several other major phases following. Much remained uncertain due to considerable reuse of timber and large-scale reorganisation of the structure. A separate block was variously interpreted as a kitchen or for secondary services, before finally becoming a granary in the 18th century. Despite prior evaluation and a watching brief on services there were no clear signs of medieval domestic occupation, and the possibility was therefore mooted that the earliest phases of timber framing were derived from dismantled buildings re-erected on the site, opening up the possibility that a previously unrecognised part of Bordesley Abbey may have survived the dissolution.
