Abstract: |
An evaluation was begun on the 4th of September 2007 on land south of number 1 Red Lion Lane in Sutton. The presence of archaeological features lead to the decision to expand the trenches to an open area excavation on part of the site. Four distinct phases of activity were noted. The earliest of these phases was Romano-British and consisted of a system of large inter-cutting ditches and postholes on the western side of the site. A diverse series of features including a trackway, ditch and pits represented activity during the High Medieval period. The Post-Medieval period is represented by a road, ditches and pits. Modern activity (1750 to present) is also visible and mentioned within the report. |
