Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited at Land at 29 New End, Hampstead, London Borough of Camden, NW3 1HT. The fieldwork was undertaken between 18th and 25th January 2016 for The Linton Group. Four evaluation trenches were excavated across the site with two on the east side of the site and two on the west side of the site. Sands of the natural Bagshot sands, as illustrated on the British Geological Survey Sheet for the area (Sheet 256 Solid and Drift Edition), were encountered in all four trenches from a high point of 118.95m OD in the north-west descending to 117.38m OD in the south-west of the investigation area. Subsoil deposits were noted in all four trenches sealing the natural gravels. These were in turn capped by thick layers of modern made ground/garden soil type material. In Trenches 2 and 3 a red brick wall was found, running east-west across the site. This was probably the wall shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map, which divided the site into quarters.
