Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of the excavation of 3 test pits of 2.5m x 2.5m in order to expose the sequence of deposits and one larger 8m x 8m trench in order to allow a more detailed investigation. It was proposed that these test pits would provide a north-south cross section of deposits across the site. The evaluation revealed a sequence of natural deposits overlain by what is believed to be the former marshland relating to the time of the Bishop of Winchester's Park. Into this marshland a 17th century ditch was cut that is likely to have served as some form of boundary marker. These deposits were sealed by a series of post-medieval made ground layers. In addition, it was possible to positively identify the top of the former graveyard that related to the workhouse. A number of grave cuts, decayed coffin remains and partial remains of a neonatal burial were identified, recorded and left in situ. No archaeological features relating to the prehistoric, Roman, Saxon or Medieval periods were found. |
