Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces to undertake recording of the Grade I listed Develin Tower and adjacent Outer Curtain Wall at HM Tower of London, centred on OS NGR TQ 33715 80450. The Tower of London is a Scheduled Monument, a World Heritage Site and lies in a Conservation Area. The recording was carried out in 2014 as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent before and during conservation works. The Develin Tower lies in the south-east corner of the Outer Ward, built between 1275-85 and remodelled in the 14th century perhaps when the southern Outer Curtain Wall was built c.1348-55. Extensive 19th century rebuilds were shown from the petrological survey to have replaced much of the medieval fabric. However, medieval Kentish ragstone is present in the Outer Curtain Wall and north elevation of the Develin Tower with evidence for historic render on the former and medieval bricks in the latter. |
