Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned to undertake heritage recording survey of the scotch derrick crane at Columbia Wharf, Conduit Lane, Wharf Road, Ponders End, Enfield, Middlesex EN3. The crane was recorded to English Heritage Level 3 in advance of and during its demolition. Columbia Wharf was first developed in the mid-1930s by George Wood and Co Ltd, a firm of timber merchants. In March 1941 the wharf was sublet to Baxter, Fell and Co Ltd, a scrap metal merchant and steel stockholder contracted by the Ministry of Supply to process scrap metal requisitioned for the war effort. In November of that year the company was permitted to build a scotch derrick crane on the wharf. The company remained at Columbia Wharf until the early 1960s, following which it was leased to the shipping company John Good and Sons Ltd, which occupied the site until the early/mid-1970s. Heritage recording revealed that the crane was built by Anderson Grice Co Ltd of Carnoustie, one of the leading manufacturers of scotch derricks in the 20th century. The recording process also revealed that the crane was assembled from components derived from a variety of steel manufacturers. The crane was originally electrically powered. |
